“Clapping is for Gaytards”

The title of the post was uttered by the other half (and what a big half that is) of the Fulmer’s Belly crew in response to a series of instant messages about fight songs and their ability to create mass suicides in the stands.

Here’s a basic rundown of the conversation:

Jon: There seem to be three fight songs that are instantly recognizable in college football.  Of the three, there’s only one that causes people to spontaneously kill themselves.

Don: It’s because it’s played ad nauseum

Jon: Not to mention it’s the only fight song, you know, with words.

Don:  If you’re not a fan, it’s really in your face

Jon: Michigan’s fight song and Notre Dame’s fight song (being the other two that are famous), involve a bunch of clapping.  How gay, I can see the lyric sheet now (clap, clap clap clap)

Don: Clapping is for Gaytards.

Man, Rocky Top, I shoulda thought of that

In fairness however, the Gators chomp song has made me want to slit my wrists at times too, so bravo Florida, bravo.

The only other fight songs that I can think of off hand are the few schools that use the “I’ve been workin’ on the railroad” theme song, although they’ll tell you it’s some other song or even that it’s based off of “Glory, Glory Hallelujah” but we all know who’se been workin’ on the railroad, and here’s looking at you Texas… and Georgia…

First off, I’ll point out that Rocky Top is my 2nd favorite fight song (outside of its wicked over-played-ness). But there’s another fight song with good lyrics: Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech. And it was written about the school, not an unrelated song that was then adopted.

I entirely agree about ND’s and UM’s fight songs. They’re considered “the best” even though their lyrics suck shit. Yeah, they got nice tunes, but a good fight song should have a good tune and good words.

I love your site, guys. Just found it yesterday and it’s one of my favorite blogs already.

Jeff, you have a list of favorite blogs? That’s so gay. The fact that Rocky Top is your 2nd favorite fight song suggests are at least bisexual. Rocky Top is the greatest fight song ever!.. to real men.

Well, Jeff, we thank you for us being on your list, however gay or not gay it might be.

And Keith, yes, Rocky Top will make a real man out of boys.  Not to mention that it’s one of the few songs that can make grown men cry at the same time.
