A Call to SEC Fans

And Bloggers.

Tennessee is the only team left in the NCAA tournament, and that being the case, is the only chance the league has of making it a 3-peat for the National Championship crown. That being said, I call on all the SEC fans and SEC bloggers to put aside our rivalries and root for Tennessee. I know it will be hard for some of you (cough, Florida), but who would you rather have win the thing? Tennessee, or some team from some inferior conference that just got lucky?

Whenever it’s bowl season or postseason for the big sports (there’s just not enough coverage to be able to follow the fates of the diving and indoor track and field teams), I’ll generally root for the SEC team to win, you know, as a blatant show of superiority over other conferences. I’m not mentioning this in order to win brownie points (has anyone ever cashed those in?) or anything like that, but it’s just kind of the way things tend to work out. It’s the “us” vs. “them” mentality. It starts with one’s own team, then blossoms out to their own conference then to say, one’s country (since the Olympics are coming up and all).

On a side note, has anyone else ever thought that sending out the NCAA National Champion teams in whatever sport to the Olympics would be better for team chemistry and what not? Just a thought, but I digress.

SEC Kicks Ass.. ‘Cept for the logo which is kind of lame.

Obviously I’m not idealistic enough to believe that actual “rooting” of any team really helps unless you’re at the actual event able to make noise (although Tennessee boosters oftentimes don’t get that particular memo), but it’s nice to have the support. Hey, I’d do it for you guys (well, probably not, but you know, don’t mind that).

So, here’s to you, fans of the SEC, and bloggers of teams in the SEC that aren’t Tennessee: root for Tennessee. Drink some orange juice, take home an orange and white construction cone (they make great end tables), and go buy a bunch of Tennessee gear (am I going too far?) and let’s root the Tennessee BasketVols (and Lady Vols if you’re so inclined) to the 6th National Title for SEC Major Sports in the last 3 years (Florida [BB], Florida [BB], Florida [FB], LSU[FB], Tennessee[WBB]).

You left out Vandy’s co-ed bowling championship!

Getting the GAYtors and Tide fans will be tough. Especially on Alabama as most of their football roster is currently serving time for various off the field issues.

But even I, the great and powerful MoonDog (The Wizard of Oz was on this weekend- between games, of course), root for the GAYtors when the SEC lines up against someone else.

I usually pull for the SEC, but never for certain teams, like Vandy and Georgia, so I was delighted watching them lose. Was pulling for Arkansas and Mississippi State though.

We need all the help we can get, though. Maybe not only scatter some cheerleader signs around the perimeter, but the players can keep a few in their pants, and toss them in front of Louisville players if they’re going in for a layup or something.

Well, I pull for ALL teams in the ESS-EEE-SEE except Florida. The reason, you might ask? Well, I hate Florida more than I love Tennessee.

But then again, I am a jackass and am completely inadequate as a blogger, a fan, and as a human being …

    … sigh

As a born and raised Tennessee fan, I will be pulling for the Vols to reach the Final Four. I’d love nothing more than to see UT make UNC eat it.
But as a Kansas alum I’m rooting for Kansas to win the title.
