Holbert Out

Posted on Sunday 30 March 2008

GVX is reporting that Senior Fullback David Holbert suffered a knee injury in the FootVols first major scrimmage over the weekend, and is probably out for the rest of the spring, and possibly out for longer.

Holbert suffered a season ending knee injury last year and missed all 14 games, and was hoping to have a bigger role this year in the revamped offense.  It is a very unfortunate story for a kid who had to endure missing the entire season last year and hopefully he can get well enough to be back this year, and if not, hopefully the NCAA will find some compassion and grant him a medical redshirt 6th year.

All our wishes go out to Holbert, and we hope you get well soon.

Lady Vols Advance

Posted on Sunday 30 March 2008

In what has almost become old hat, the Lady BasketVols were able to advance to the Elite 8 following a 10 point win against the Notre Dame uh, Fighting Lady Irish?  Lady Fighting Irish?  just Fighting Irish?  on Sunday night.

Candace Parker tied her career high with 34 points with an offensive and defensive barrage that sent Notre Dame home with yet another loss to Tennessee.  Notre Dame’s coach, Muffet (yes, Muffet) McGraw has never defeated Tennessee, and that streak will last until at least next year.

With the win, Pat Summitt has now won 101 games in the NCAA tournament, an achievement that will likely never be matched (unless Coach K coaches for another 15 years, 40 if Duke keeps going out in the first and second rounds).

Congratulations to the Lady Vols who advance to the Elite 8 to face Texas A&M on Tuesday.

Anything you can do…

Posted on Thursday 27 March 2008

GVX is reporting that Tennessee tight end Jeff Cottam has broken his right fibula, causing him to miss the rest of spring practice.

Man, I’m not a little brother so I’m not sure how it is, but apparently the oneupsmanship runs strong in the Cottam family. Sooner or later, they’re going to start breaking limbs off of their actual family tree. Get it? Limbs? Limbs? No?… Tennessee just lost in the Sweet 16, give me a break.  I would have written something better, but instead of passing me the ball, Ramar Smith just ran into 5 players to try for a reverse layup.

Crapola

Posted on Thursday 27 March 2008

Well, the history making season has come to an end.  A bad start doomed the BasketVols who were never able to get into any kind of rhythm whatsoever.  Not to point fingers, but when you’re playing against the refs as well, it’s never easy to win.  Also, not to point fingers at the players as this is a team game, and the team wins and loses together, but Ramar Smith is pretty… questionable in his decision making at best.

But all that aside, congratulations to Bruce Pearl and the BasketVols for a great season and a second consecutive Sweet 16 berth along with 31 wins on the season.  Next year will be an interesting year seeing as how Lofton and JaJuan Smith’s college careers are both over.

The thing that I feel the worst for the team is Lofton and Smith, going out like they did.  Not being able to show what they could do, and not being able to go out on a high note.

Congratulations to the Louisville Cardinals on a very well played game.  Their balance and rebounding were too much to overcome for the BasketVols on this day.

Hope, Faith, Destiny?

Posted on Thursday 27 March 2008

This is the time of year where all the good storylines come into play.  Every team has them, and every team hopes to be the team destined to do great things.  No matter what happens later tonight, this Tennessee team has been one of the great basketball teams Rocky Top has ever witnessed.  That being said, it’d be that much more sweet for the senior class to be able to make history yet again and advance.  Which brings us to this video.

YouTube Preview Image

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, now I’ll be over in the corner, I got something in both my eyes.

Arrests – not just for players

Posted on Wednesday 26 March 2008

While reading through the Fark headlines, I came across this gem. Allegedly (that’s a term us respected journalists news passer onners use to avoid libel charges), a man at the University of Miami (not Ohio) called the computer techs because his work computer was going slowly. The reason for this slow down was due to alleged (there’s that word again) child pornography on his computer. The man whose computer this allegedly belongs to? None other than the spokesman for Miami football.

**Editor’s Note: we realize Alison Stokke isn’t bait anymore, but… fap fap fap fap… sorry what?”**

Now, I have seen my fair share of porn, and I probably have a fair amount saved on my hard drive, but what kind of porn actually slows down your computer? Is that how child porn works? Does it make your computer retarded?

No doubt, the spokesman became accustomed to Canes players being arrested for bad behavior and felt like he should find his own creative avenue to the slammer. Or maybe he just misses a few of the players and wanted to be with them on a more permanent basis (roomie, anyone?)

And who was the spokesman for this new release? Do they have a backup? How does one become the spokesman? Do we have one? If not, can I do it? I promise not to look at kiddie porn.

Fulmer: Fired Up

Posted on Wednesday 26 March 2008

We’ve been focusing on basketball lately, and rightfully so, but here’s a little morsel of the football season that is fast approaching will never arrive.

Coach Fulmer held his press conference after spring practice earlier on Tuesday, and aside from the fact that the cameraman for VolunteerTV had some sort of fascination with the extreme closeup zoom, one thing that could be taken from the press conference was that Fulmer was fired up. In fact, it’s the most fired up I’ve seen him in a press conference in the last… well, ever.

Phil “work like heck” Fulmer, the king of censoring himself in front of a camera (unless it’s during a game, and he doesn’t realize the audio is on him), actually dropped a wordy dird on camera, although he promptly fixed it. Even though the word was only “damn,” Fulmer’s not really one to drop any sort of profanity whilst talking to the media. I take it as a good sign.

Hopefully the renewed energy of having a new, fresh and younger coaching staff in place is building up the coach’s fire under his belly (we feel the heat.. and let me tell you, it’s a HUGE fire). Of course, we’ll have to see how this translates on the field against the best competition in the country, but until then, signs look positive.

*Note, the audio is kind of loud, so turn the volume down a little bit

Volunteer TV doesn’t like to give out embedding codes, so check out the video above, and enjoy the sights and sounds of spring football.
